This post is for anyone who wants to experience the magic of the Western Algarve, the place that stole my heart and convinced me to call it home. Get ready for stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs, and the raw power of the Atlantic Ocean. This West Coast Express Tour is my go-to itinerary for friends visiting, offering a taste of everything I love about this region.
The Tour:
This adventure can be a thrilling half-day trip or a relaxed full-day exploration, depending on your pace. Be warned, though, after experiencing this wild coastline, you might never want to leave!
Stop 1: Praia do Bordeira – Breathtaking Coastline and Powerful Waves
Our journey begins at Praia do Bordeira, a vast, 3km stretch of golden sand nestled within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. This beach is ideal for long walks, but be aware – the Atlantic waves here can be wild and the currents strong. Skilled surfers will find incredible conditions due to offshore winds, but beginners should proceed with caution.
Tip: Drive to the clifftop for a truly breathtaking panorama. Park your car and take the boardwalk all the way to the rock overlooking the beach. The view is especially impressive on days with big waves!
Stop 2: Praia do Amado – A Surfer’s Paradise with Scenic Delights
Next, we head to Praia do Amado, another stunning beach and a renowned surfing hotspot. Here, you’ll find surf schools and a charming little bar/snack bar to refresh yourself.
The Hidden Gem: Don’t miss the scenic coastal dirt road between Bordeira and Amado. This route offers breathtaking views at every turn, with plenty of opportunities to pull over and capture unforgettable photos. Be prepared for a bit of vertigo as you stand atop the rocks, especially here where this picture was taken!
Hungry for More? Before reaching Amado, you’ll find the “Sitio do Forno” restaurant, a haven for seafood lovers with a spectacular terrace overlooking the ocean.
Half-Day Option: If you’re short on time, Praia do Amado can be your final stop. Relax on the beach, grab a bite, and soak in the scenery. But for the truly adventurous, the journey continues!
Stop 3: Arrifana – Stunning Views and Beginner-Friendly Surf
A 30-minute drive from Amado takes us to Arrifana, another surfer’s favorite. Unlike Bordeira, Arrifana provides a more sheltered environment, making it perfect for beginners to catch their first waves. The views from both the clifftop and the Fortaleza (fortress) are absolutely spectacular.
Insider Tip: Driving down to the beach is tricky due to the narrow road and resident-only parking. During summer, a golf cart taxi service ferries guests back and forth. In winter, be prepared for a leg workout on the way back up!
Foodie Alert: Next to the Fortaleza, “O Paulo” offers another excellent seafood restaurant with incredible ocean views. Sunset here or at the Fortaleza is an experience you won’t forget!
Stop 4: Praia do Monte Clerigo – Family Fun and Exquisite Cuisine
Just a 10-minute drive from Arrifana lies Praia do Monte Clerigo, my favorite spot for family outings. When the tide recedes, it reveals a network of shallow pools perfect for kids to play in. This beach is also popular with surfers, but be mindful of the strong currents.
Restaurant Recommendation: For a truly special experience, head to “O Sargo“. This restaurant offers Portuguese cuisine with a modern twist, all while boasting unbeatable beachfront views.
Stop 5: Amoreira – A Scenic Finale
Our final stop is Amoreira, a mere 5-minute drive from Monte Clerigo. The scenic coastal road leading here is another highlight of the tour. From Amoreira, it’s a comfortable 40-minute drive back to Lagos.
Voila! That’s it, the West Coast Express Tour. Buckle up and get ready for a day filled with adventure, stunning scenery, and unforgettable experiences.
